Excellent article about the Italian painter Girolamo Pieri Nerli by Gordon H. Brown, then editor of the Auckland City Art Gallery Quarterly. Nerli spent the last two decades of the nineteenth century in Australia and New Zealand and in this article Brown writes:

"Nerli's reputation largely rested on his association with either Charles Conder or Frances Hodgkins, both of whom it is said were influenced by him early in their careers as painters. This view is being modified so that Nerli, as an individual painter, is now coming into his own with some significance within the context of New Zealand painting, and to a lesser extent, Australian painting."

The 12 page article explores Nerli's life and art, and includes several images of his paintings (unfortunately printed in black and white only).

Art work by Nerli can be found at the Auckland Art Gallery Nerli is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, most of the Australian state galleries and the principal public collections of New Zealand.

Auckland University Press published a hardback book about Nerli in 2005 Nerli: An Italian Painter in the South Pacific, by Michael Dunn. Other biographies of Nerli can be found in: Te Ara - The Encyclopedia of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa - Museum of New Zealand
