Article about the descendants of the original Romano immigrants who continue to grow tomatoes and other produce today. Cataldo Romano arrived in Nelson in 1925 as a 16-year-old, and together with several of his compatriots helped build a thriving tomato industry in The Wood, an area that soon became known as Nelson’s Little Italy, with most of the small private-lane developments now carrying names like Romano Way, DiLeva Way, Monopoli Way and Albano Way. Now a third and fourth generation of Romanos, Bettina Romano and her children Clarissa and Anthony, are carrying on the family tradition from their property on Cable Bay Rd and sell their produce at the Nelson Farmers Market, to restaurants, and from the stall at their gate.
