The title of Amato's work The Full Circle of the Travelling Cuckoo (1967)reveals the migrant writer's sense of dislocation but, at the same time, indicates the ability to reconcile with one's difficult past and adapt to his adopted homeland, New Zealand. Renato Amato (1928-1964) made a contribution to the New Zealand literary scene of the early 1960s, publishing numerous short stories in English and completing two more novels which remained unpublished. Through critical analysis of these manuscripts in particular, this article proposes to understand Amato's multiple identities as a migrant and author, shedding light on his experiences as the sole Italian writer in the predominantly Anglo-Celtic literary environment of the 1950s-60s.
