The Società Dante Alighieri di Christchurch (Dante Alighieri Society of Christchurch) was founded in 1960 by Bruno Ballara, his sister Mrs Marusa Byatt and with the encouragement of Professor Douglas Kidd, head of the Classics Department of the University of Canterbury.
Registered as a Charitable Incorporated Society, with a committee and a president elected every year, the Society holds regular social and cultural events, run language classes for adults, and meet monthly from March to November. Members are of all ages, many of whom have had Italian experiences or are Italians now living in Christchurch.
The mission of the Dante Society is to promote an appreciation of Italian achievements within the arts, literature, science, and to promote the study and preservation of the Italian language and culture.
The Dante Alighieri Society of Christchurch is a branch of the Dante Alighieri Society headquartered in Rome.
In addition to the website, the Society also has a Fb Group.
