Papers available from the National Library of New Zealand. These includes census sheets (originals, with a photocopied set also) on Italians in New Zealand compiled by Mr Biagi, the Italian Consul-General in Melbourne, Australia, 1877 and 1880. Also articles written by Ballara, extracts from the AJHRs (1876, 1883), correspondence, and advertisements for Italian businesses.

Publication - An article based on census material in these papers has been published (Alan Poletti Italian Censuses in Nineteenth Century New Zealand, Italian Historical Society Journal, 9/2 (2001))

Mr Ballara (1927-2002) worked for the Italian Consul General in Melbourne which compiled the statistics on Italians in New Zealand. He has also written a booklet (1975) on Italians in New Zealand: Presenza italiana in Nuova Zelanda
